Dr. Armen Khachatryan
Dr. Armen Khachatryan is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon specializing in minimally invasive microsurgery and the treatment of cervical and lumbar spinal disease.
In addition to broad training in many traditional spinal surgical options — such as decompression laminectomies and fusion — Dr. Khachatryan has extensive experience in minimally invasive surgery, motion preservation technology, artificial disc replacement and non-fusion technologies.

Dr. Armen Khachatryan is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon specializing in minimally invasive microsurgery and the treatment of cervical and lumbar spinal disease.
In addition to broad training in many traditional spinal surgical options — such as decompression laminectomies and fusion — Dr. Khachatryan has extensive experience in minimally invasive surgery, motion preservation technology, artificial disc replacement and non-fusion technologies.
Dr Khachatryan has been a clinical investigator in a number of different FDA clinical trials, including a novel bioactive composite for vertebral fracture treatment and a pivotal FDA trial for Mobi-C cervical artificial disc replacement. After nearly six years of clinical trials, this device was approved by the FDA for clinical use in August 2013. Mobi-C is currently the only artificial disc replacement available in United States that has been approved by the FDA both for single and two level disc replacement surgery.
On numerous occasions, Dr. Khachatryan has been invited to and has participated at national conferences, training other spinal surgeons in the use of cervical artificial disc implants.
Dr. Khachatryan was among the first to implant artificial discs in Utah, both in the lumbar and cervical spine. He is a firm believer in preserving motion with disc replacement surgery instead of traditional fusion surgery. In 2013, Dr. Khachatryan established The Disc Replacement Center at Jordan Valley—the first of its kind in Utah. This Center will continue to further research and education in disc replacement technology, and provide an alternative to fusion for patients both in Utah and nationally.
Dr. Khachatryan was born in Yerevan, Armenia. In 1980, at the age of fourteen, he immigrated with his family to United States and settled in Los Angeles, CA. He graduated from Hollywood High School in 1984. He earned a bachelor’s degree in Molecular Biology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1988. He received his medical degree, with honors, from Yale University School of Medicine in 1996. He completed his surgical internship and his orthopedic surgical residency at the University of Utah Department of Orthopedics. He followed this with a combined spine fellowship at the University of Utah Department of Orthopedics and Shriner’s Hospital for Children. In 2002, after completing his extensive training, he became the Director of Comprehensive Spine Center at Desert Orthopedic Center in Rancho Mirage, CA. In 2007, Dr. Khachatryan relocated back to Utah and joined his colleagues at Center of Orthopedic and Rehabilitation Excellence.
Dr. Khachatryan is married to Emily and cherishes every moment with his twin children, Jack and Isabel. He is an avid cyclist, golfer and skier. He has cycled across the United States twice and once across the Iberian Peninsula through Portugal and Spain. His lifelong commitment to fitness is the driving force behind restorative and motion preserving spinal surgery.

Jeff Devaney, NP, joined Dr. Khachatryan’s practice in 2012 because of his deep interest and passion to educate and care for surgical patients. Jeff has made many wonderful contributions to our team and plays an integral role in everyday care of our patients.
Jeff first started working in the healthcare industry nearly fifteen years ago. He earned his Bachelor of Science and Nursing degree from Colby-Sawyer College in New London, NH. He began his career as a registered nurse on the medical/surgical unit, followed by the Intermountain Burn Center ICU, at the University of Utah Medical Center. After few years, Jeff went on to earn his Nurse Practitioner degree from the University of Utah School of Nursing in 2003. He then worked on the orthopedic floor until 2008 when he became a Hospitalist at Jordan Valley Medical Center, managing the care of medical and surgical patients during their hospitalization. He remained in this role until 2012 when he joined Dr. Khachatryan at the Spine Center.
Jeff moved to Utah in 1998, from his home in the Northeast to pursue his love of the great outdoors, including skiing, mountain biking and hiking. He is married to Mindy and treasures his role as a father of two wonderful daughters, Adeline and Ava. A Welch Corgi and a Beagle complete their family.

Matt Allred

Matt Allred, RN BSN, is the lone Utah native among the team at The Disc Replacement Center. Matt has worked in spinal surgery for nearly 9 years, both in surgical and clinical settings. In 2007, he started working with Dr. Khachatryan in the operating room as a surgical tech.
His tenacious regard for detail and tremendous interest in quality and efficiency very quickly caught Dr. Khachatryan’s attention. While working full time and supporting his family, Matt went on to earn his Bachelor’s of Science and Nursing degree from Grand Canyon University and joined Dr. Khachatryan’s practice shortly thereafter. Matt is able to fill numerous different roles and among many of his current responsibilities include email and phone communications with patients, assisting with clinic and surgical care of the patients, social media and direct marketing. Matt has spent countless hours in the development of The Disc Replacement Center at Jordan Valley Medical Center.
